On October 5, 1897, S A Andrée landed on White Island. On October 5, 1930, he was back in Sweden. On October 5, 2013, the copy of his jacket will be on sale in our store, a numbered edition of 97 pieces – the Andrée collection is complete!
That said, after a long wait, the winter wardrobe is now complete for those who want to wear updated polar history of the highest quality. The entire collection will be displayed at the annual fashion show organized by the Lions in Gränna on 2 October.
Not long ago we had a book launch at the museum. On Saturday, October 5, it’s time again. Magnus Carlsson (Huskvarna) presents his book on Knut Frænkel, the doldrums of the Andrée expedition. We can promise some brand new, previously unpublished material from our archives. Through this book, finally, all three will appear to us much more clearly.
One of the highlights of the fall is the School Polar Days. For the fourth year, we are organizing this meeting between school students and young researchers, this year on 9-10 October. We have 553 registered students from six different schools. New for this year is the live broadcast of two lectures on the first day, at 11.40-12.20 and 13.10-13.50. These broadcasts will then be available for download from our and the Polar Research Secretariat’s websites. We will provide links to this information in due course.
The Winter Station is sold, so this is the last weekend to see it. You have more time to see the faces of the Arctic, but don’t miss it; very good and different photography from the Arctic.
Faces of the Arctic, a photo exhibition by Mareike Timm on the contrasts between man and nature in the Arctic; images from Greenland, Svalbard and Northern Norway.
Press preview on Friday 20 September at 14.00. Vernissage on Saturday 21 September at 11.00 a.m.
Mareike Timm is a German photographer working in Sweden. Born in 1986 in Rostock, she moved to Gothenburg at the age of 19. She studied at the College of Photography and then began training as a documentary photographer at the Nordic School of Photography, where she will graduate next year. A keen interest in colder latitudes has taken her and her camera to Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Svalbard.
The series of images on display was created as part of her degree project at the Nordic School of Photography. The project is ongoing and will be a comprehensive portrait of the Arctic today.
